After living in Chicago for a stint, Mary (Ava Gardner) returns to her tiny "whistle stop" hometown only to find herself caught between the affections of a former lover and his sworn enemy. Mary must choose one of them before the fight for her love turns into a crime of passion.

Trivia: Two-time Oscar winner Victor McLaglen (Gitlo) was a John Ford regular and the father of director Andrew McLaglen (McLintock). The screenplay for this film was adapted from a 1941 novel of the same name by author Maritta Wolff.
