Over 20,000 Japanese and 7000 American soldiers were killed in the battle, which included the moment went five marines and a Navy corpsman raised the US flag on Mt. Suribachi. The event was immortalized in a photograph by Joe Rosenthal and is also shown in this film.
Trivia: The movie received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary.
